Reception

Our Reception class has a different name every year, usually based on a high quality picture book.  We have been the 'Mogs', the 'Mr Toucans' and even the 'Pete the Cats' in recent years.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and aim to promote a love of learning, whilst ensuring children feel they belong and can begin to understand what it means to be a member of our community at St Michael's.  Children have the opportunity to join in with whole school activities within our extensive school grounds and we make regular trips out into Thorpe on the Hill, including visiting the church, exploring our immediate environment and enjoying the local nature park and play area.

At first, our day is based on play, children are encouraged to make their own decisions and develop independence within a safe, secure and happy classroom environment.  Routine, music and visual prompts are used to help them adapt to life in school and we pride ourselves on getting to know each child individually. There is a strong focus on developing the 'foundational skills' children will need to be successful throughout their time at school, including confident speaking, asking questions and listening as well as the key physical skills they will eventually need for reading and writing.

Story time is an essential part of our day and children will share a wide range of new books and old favourites.  Throughout the year, we gradually introduce direct teaching and group work in phonics (Read Write Inc), reading, writing, handwriting, Maths, PE and RE to ensure children are ready to continue their progress in Year One.

We aim to develop positive and supportive relationships with families and ensure that each child meets their potential as their individuality and uniqueness is recognised and valued.

We aim to strike the right balance between following children's interests and things that are happening in their lives and enabling them to develop new interests and learn more about the wider world
