English

At St Michael's, we believe that a quality English curriculum should encourage children's love of reading, writing and spoken language.

We are passionate about reading, and believe it is the gateway for children to access the world around them.  Reading purposefully, frequently, and for pleasure is crucial in supporting well-being, curiosity and academic success.  Pupils can then use the skills they have developed to answer their own questions about the world across a range of subjects; through the skills of decoding, fluency and comprehension.

We recognise the importance of creating a culture where children take great pride in their writing and they are able to adapt their writing to a variety of text types and contexts.  We aim to inspire children to be confident at speaking and listening, which then enables them to make positive contributions during discussions.

We believe that no matter the starting point, all children can achieve in English!

In KS1, children begin their journey into English by following Read Write Inc. The teaching of Read Write Inc. is a huge priority for us and as such the vast majority of our staff team are involved in delivering this scheme each and every day. We are passionate in ensuring that all of our children are able to read as early as possible so that they can access the curriculum offer to its full.

Once children have moved away from the Read Write Inc. scheme they work on specific English lessons based on texts linked to our topics.  As a team we have linked key texts to each topic to ensure that the children are exposed to high quality books to inspire and engage the children.

To support the children's learning, a link to their key words to spell and ideas to support can be found here.

Our intent, implementation and impact of our English curriculum can be found below:

Each class has 50 books which are used to develop a love of reading; these books can be shared at home or in school to inspire our readers!  Below are the recommended reads for each year group
